5 Things You Can do to Make Your Dog's Day
Share
Our dogs do a lot for us. They cheer us up, make us laugh, and are somehow always happy to see us (even if we’ve just popped out for ten minutes). So it’s only fair that we try to make their lives as joyful as possible too.
But the good news? It doesn’t take loads of time or money. Just a few simple things can completely turn your dog’s day around.
Here are five things you can do right now (or today!) to make your dog’s tail wag that little bit harder.
1. Let Them Sniff (Like, Really Sniff)
It might not look very exciting to us, but sniffing is huge for dogs. They get more out of sniffing a lamp post than we get from scrolling Instagram for an hour.
So next time you’re out on a walk, slow down. Let them follow their nose. Even if it means stopping every two feet — that’s how they learn about the world.
Try a “sniff walk” where you let your dog decide the route. You’ll be surprised how different it feels (and they’ll love you for it).
2. Play A Game They Love (Even If It’s a Weird One)
Some dogs are obsessed with fetch. Others prefer a game of tug, or even just charging around the house with a sock.
Whatever your dog loves, take ten minutes today to just go with it. No agenda, no training — just silly, unstructured fun.
You don’t need fancy toys either. An old tea towel or a cardboard box can be just as exciting as something from the pet shop.
3. A Mini Massage or Gentle Tummy Rub
Most dogs absolutely melt when you get the right spot — behind the ears, under the chin, or that magic bit near the base of the tail.
Try sitting down with your dog and giving them a few minutes of gentle, calm touch. Not a scratchy fuss, but more like a slow, relaxing stroke.
If they lean into it or fall asleep, you’re doing it right.
4. Switch Up the Scenery
If you always walk the same route, mix it up. Take a left instead of a right, or drive five minutes to a new field or footpath.
Even small changes are super exciting for your dog. New smells, new textures, new trees to wee on… it’s like a holiday for them.
If you don’t have time to go far, even walking the same street in the opposite direction can feel different.
5. Hide Treats Around the House
This one’s really easy and loads of fun. Hide a few treats around the room while your dog’s out of sight, then call them in and let them hunt them down.
Behind cushions, under plant pots (empty ones!), inside cardboard tubes — use your imagination.
It’s great for their brain, gives them a little challenge, and makes boring indoor time way more exciting.
That’s it! Just five simple things, no spending required.
The truth is, your dog doesn’t care how busy you are or how fancy their toys are — they just want to be with you, have a bit of fun, and know they’re loved.
